Bantam - 2003-2004
September 19, 2003 - Guelph - 2-5 L: The Rangers dominated the first period, but did not score. Guelph got two early goals in the second period and a goal late in the second, after the Rangers had tied it up. John Kurtz scored both Rangers goals, including one that was unassisted. Assist went to Brett Runciman and Alex Crepinsek. Back to Results
September 24, 2003 - Welland - 1-1 T: A fast-paced, entertaining game. There were plenty of scoring opportunities for both sides, with the edge going to the Rangers. Graeme Moffatt played a strong game in net. Rangers goal by John Kurtz, assisted by Kyle Badham and Jamie Kulla. Back to Results
September 30, 2003 - Hamilton - 3-3 T: Five goals were scored in the first period. The Rangers scored two quick goals to take an early lead. Hamilton then scored three straight. Jordan Watts scored the tying goal in the third period. John Kurtz scored in his sixth straight game, with Kyle Badham getting the other goal. Assists to Tyson Theaker (2), Kevin Oliveira and Stephen Guzzo. Back to Results
October 1, 2003 - Guelph - 4-2 W: A nice effort from the Rangers, especially considering that they played the night before and had an early morning practice. Oakville took an early lead and never looked back, with two goals by Kyle Badham, and singles to Tyson Theaker and Stuart Favretto. Assists to Theaker, Badham, Kevin Oliveira, John Kurtz and Brett Runciman. Back to Results
October 4, 2003 - Burlington - 2-2 T: The backhand shot was the weapon of choice for the Rangers, with Kevin Oliveira and Cedric Soubry each putting one past the Eagles goalie from the slot. Assists to Aaron Mirsky, Jordan Watts, Brett Runciman and Dan Hunt. The Rangers were keeping the pressure on until a series of penalties seemed to take them out of sync. Burlington scored two power play goals to tie the game. Back to Results
October 7, 2003 - Niagara Falls - 7-2 W: John Kurtz scored his first of two goals less than a minute into the game. The Rangers scored the next goal, but Niagara Falls tied it up at 2-2. The game turned during two Niagara Falls power plays in the second period. In one, Jeremy Webster made several solid saves to keep the score even. In the next, a short time after his tremendous forecheck in the Niagara Falls end, Jordan Watts stole the puck at the Rangers blue line and scored a short-handed goal on a breakaway. The Rangers dominated in the third period, scoring four more goals. Goals to Kurtz (2), Dan Hunt, Jordan Watts, Kevin Oliveira, Brett Runciman and Alex Corrance. Assists to Tyson Theaker (3), Murray Cruickshank, Kyle Badham, Cedric Soubry (2), Alex Crepinsek, Hunt, Corrance and Watts. Back to Results
October 11, 2003 - Grey Bruce - 2-4 L: The Rangers started off slowly and Grey Bruce took advantage, building an early 2-0 lead. It turned out to be a modern version of the "fog bowl", making it difficult for the players to see. Cedric Soubry scored a great goal off an assist from Brett Runciman. Soubry split the defence and then, just as it looked like he ran out of room to shoot, he roofed the puck. The other Ranger goal was scored by Dan Hunt, with assists to Alex Crepinsek and Stuart Favretto. Back to Results
October 14, 2003 - St. Catharines - 5-3 W: Oakville played well in the first period. They carried the puck into the Sabres end, but could not seem to get any quality scoring chances. By mid-way through the second period, St. Catharines had built a 2-0 lead and it did not look like Oakville was going to get many opportunities to score. Cue the comeback. The Rangers turned things around, scoring the next four goals and gaining a 5-3 victory. Goals to Alex Corrance, Brett Runciman, Kevin Oliveira (2) and Tyson Theaker. Assists to Kyle Badham (2), Theaker, Brett Runciman, John Kurtz (2) and Stuart Favretto. Back to Results
October 21, 2003 - Welland - 1-6 L: A tough game to watch from a Rangers fan's perspective. The Rangers worked hard and appeared to control the play for much of the game. The Rangers cycled the puck well, particularly in the second period. However, give credit to where it is due. The Tigers made the most of their scoring opportunities and took the win. Kyle Badham scored for the Rangers off assists from Kevin Oliveira and Tyson Theaker. Back to Results
November 4, 2003 - Grey Bruce - 3-2 W: The Rangers played a strong game, having just participated in the Sudbury Big Nickel Tournament. They needed to play well, because they were up against the Highlanders, who came into the game 11-0 in league play. Hard work by the whole team paid off and the Rangers controlled most of the game. John Kurtz scored two unassisted goals, including a shorthanded breakaway goal. The Highlanders poured it on in the third, but Jeremy Webster stopped a number of tough shots from in close. The Rangers took the momentum back at the end of the game and handed the Highlanders their first loss in league play this year. The other Ranger goal was scored by Tyson Theaker, assisted by Jamie Kulla. Back to Results
November 8, 2003 - St. Catharines - 1-1 T: The Sabres hosted the Rangers in a low-scoring contest. Both teams checked hard in the neutral zone and the scoring chances were few and far between. Jordan Watts made the most of his opportunity. For the third time this year, he stole the puck from the opposing defenceman at the Rangers' blue line and followed up by scoring an important goal on a breakaway. Back to Results
November 11, 2003 - Niagara Falls - 3-1 W: It was all Rangers in this one-sided tilt. Even though the Rangers played short-handed most of the second half of the game, they gave up only one short-handed goal and controlled the game throughout. The Aaron Mirsky, Jordan Watts and Kevin Oliveira line took care of the offence. Watts continued with his hot hand, scoring two goals and assisting on the third. Mirsky scored one goal and assisted on two. Oliveira picked up an assist and landed some hard bodychecks. Back to Results
November 15, 2003 - Hamilton - 2-4 L: It was a back and forth game until the Bulldogs got an insurance goal in the third period. The Bulldogs did many things right and looked good. The Rangers worked hard and looked good too, but fell short. Kevin Oliveira scored on a perfectly placed one-timer, off a pass from Aaron Mirsky. Dan Hunt's hard work on a penalty kill paid off. He chased the puck all the way up-ice and scored when a Bulldog lost the puck in front of the opponent's net. Back to Results
November 18, 2003 - Halton Hills - 2-1 W: Kyle Badham scored both Oakville goals in an entertaining game to watch. Both teams played with speed and determination. Alex Crepinsek dished out some heavy bodychecks, including a thunderous hit in the first period. Jamie Kulla saved a goal by getting his stick in front of the puck at the last second when a Hurricane had sent a shot towards an open net. It turned out to be a game saver. John Kurtz racked up two assists and Aaron Mirsky and Jordan Watts each got one assist. Back to Results
November 24, 2003 - Halton Hills - 2-3 L: The Rangers got a lucky break when a Hurricane defenceman scored on his own goal. The goal was credited to Murray Crucickshank with an assist to the goalie, Jeremy Webster. The Rangers built a 2-0 lead when Jordan Watts made the most of a breakaway and slipped one into the net on his forehand. However, in a game where the team falls flat as a whole and takes too many penalties, two breaks are not usually enough. Back to Results
November 26, 2003 - Burlington - 1-3 L: John Kurtz proved that wooden sticks work as well as the high tech and more expensive composites, by scoring on his first shift. His goal was assisted by his linemates, Kyle Badham and Kevin Oliveira. The Rangers appear to be in a bit of a funk, which sometimes happens in the course of a season. Burlington took advantage and won the game 3-1. Back to Results
November 29, 2003 - Brampton - 3-1 W: The Rangers nearly doubled their shots on net, as compared to their previous two games. Brampton got almost as many shots, but Jeremy Webster had a strong game in net. With the Rangers up 2-1 early in the second period, Ranger penalties gave Brampton chance after chance to tie the game. The penalty killers played well and Jordan Watts scored an insurance goal late in the third to secure the victory. Other Ranger goals by Aaron Mirsky and John Kurtz, with assists to Tyson Theaker, Kyle Badham, Mirsky and Alex Crepinsek. Back to Results
December 3, 2003 - Guelph - 2-2 T: After a fairly evenly played two periods of free-flowing hockey, the Rangers found themselves down 2-0. They clawed their way back and tied it up at 2 with just over four minutes left in the game. The Rangers played the last four minutes short-handed. Having just tied up the game, they refused to let the game slip away. The penalty killers held the fort. The Kurtz/Badham/Watts line accounted for the scoring. John Kurtz scored both goals. Watts got two assists and Badham got one assist. Back to Results
December 5, 2003 - Grey Bruce - 2-7 L: The Highlanders broke out with five goals in the second period. The Rangers won the third period, but lost the game. Goals by Kyle Badham and Dan Hunt, with assists to John Kurtz and Stuart Favretto. Back to Results
December 8, 2003 - Niagara Falls - 4-2 W: The Rangers' guest coach used short shifts and kept them rolling. The Rangers responded by playing with energy. There was a lot of back and forth play and both teams had difficulty getting shots on net. Niagara Falls drew first blood, but the Rangers came back and built a 3-1 lead, with Jordan Watts displaying quick hands on the first goal, Tyson Theaker displaying his deking skills on the second and Brett Runciman displaying a great reaching effort on the third. Niagara Falls was down by one goal with less than a minute to play. When they pulled their goalie for the extra attacker, Jamie Kulla placed a well-aimed shot into the empty net from his own end. Assists to Runciman, Alex Crepinsek, Watts, Mirsky and John Kurtz. Back to Results
December 16, 2003 - St. Catharines - 7-3 W: Rangers fans were thinking "outburst" and "onslaught" as the Rangers exploded with four goals in the first eight minutes. The Rangers showed good anticipation, jumping on loose pucks and rebounds and putting them high in the Sabres' net. John Kurtz and Dan Hunt each had four-point nights, with Kurtz picking up two goals and two assists and Hunt getting four assists. Jamie Kulla had the hit of the night. He and a Sabre saw each other coming and they each lowered a shoulder. The Sabre was rocked. Other goals by Aaron Mirsky, Brett Runciman, Jordan Watts (2) and Tyson Theaker, with assists to Theaker (2), Kulla (2), Stuart Favretto, Runciman and Kyle Badham. Back to Results
December 20, 2003 - Brampton - 6-1 W: The Rangers jumped out to another quick start, with Aaron Mirsky scoring two goals in the first few moments of the game. Eleven Ranger players picked up points. Brett Runciman had the highlight goal of the night, roofing a backhand from in close. Other goals scored by Kyle Badham, AlexCrepinsek and Tyson Theaker, with assists to Jordan Watts, Murray Cruickshank (2), Kevin Oliveira (2), Mike Ide, Jamie Kulla (2) and John Kurtz. Back to Results
December 23, 2003 - Welland - 3-7 L: The Rangers found themselves shorthanded almost immediately and Welland scored on the power play. After falling behind 4-1, the Rangers fought back and found themselves down by only one goal. The referee was not doing the Rangers any favours. On one play, the Rangers put the puck in the net twice within 15 seconds, but the referee waived off both goals. Welland scored three more goals to seal the win. The score did not reflect the game, as the Rangers peppered the Tigers goalie with shots, controlled the second period and skated hard throughout. Brett Runciman ran his goal scoring streak to four games. Other goals to Tyson Theaker and Aaron Mirsky, with assists to Runciman, Dan Hunt, Mirsky and Stuart Favretto. Back to Results
January 3, 2003 - St. Catharines - 5-3 W: Fortunately, the Rangers came away with a win, despite a lackluster performance by most of the team. The Rangers were outshot and out-chanced, but strong performances by Graeme Moffatt in net and Alex Crepinsek as a forward were the difference. Brett Runciman also played well - skating hard and creating opportunities. With two forwards missing, Crepinsek moved up from defence and played as a power-forward. He got a number of shots on net and tallied two unnassisted goals and one assist. Moffatt stopped shot after shot and allowed his team to build a comfortable lead. Apart from Crepinsek's three points, other goals to Runciman, Kevin Oliveira and John Kurtz, with assists to Aaron Mirsky (2). Back to Results
January 10, 2003 - Guelph - 4-1 W: When the Rangers are firing on all cylinders, it is great to watch them play. The first period was a good example, with all of the Rangers showing speed, tenacity, toughness and discipline. The Rangers had a lot of jump and reacted with good anticipation on scoring chances. They were paid of with two goals in the first period. One of the goals was scored shorthanded. Kyle Badham and John Kurtz carried the puck deep into the Storm zone and continued to press. They made it look like the Rangers had the power play and Kurtz took a Badham pass and sent it into the top right corner. The game deteriorated and seemed to grind to a halt during the second period, with both teams taking numerous penalties. The Rangers showed more discipline in the third period. The Storm scored late to make it close, then Kurtz scored his second goal of the game on a power play with less than two minutes to play and Jordan Watts sealed the deal with an empty net goal. Cedric Soubry returned with a spark after an injury layoff. Brett Runciman also scored, with other assists to Soubry, Murray Cruikshank, Tyson Theaker and Jamie Kulla. Back to Results
January 13, 2003 - Niagara Falls - 6-9 L: The way the Rangers started, it looked like they would win handily. In sports, however, the tide can change in a hurry. The wheels fell off the Rangers' game and Niagara Falls made the most of it. Goals to Aaron Mirsky, Cedric Soubry (2), Jordan Watts, Tyson Theaker and Kyle Badham. Assists to Watts, Dan Hunt, Mike Ide, Kevin Oliveira, Mirksy, John Kurtz (2), Badham, Stuart Favretto (2) and Brett Runciman Back to Results
January 16, 2003 - Hamilton - 3-3 T: The Rangers found themselves in a controversial situation due to off-ice events. It would have been understandable if they had an off-game. Instead, they played very well. Both teams put a lot into the game and the result was a fast-paced encounter, with good scoring chances at both ends of the ice. The lead changed three times before a late goal by Hamilton tied it up. The Rangers have played many entertaining games with Hamilton (Stoney Creek) over the years. This game was no exception. Goals to Alex Crepinsek, Kevin Oliveira and John Kurtz, with assists to Kevin Oliveira, Jordan Watts, Stuart Favretto and Alex Corrance. Back to Results
January 20, 2003 - Halton Hills - 1-3 L: The Rangers welcomed a familiar face behind the bench in tonight's contest. Halton Hills showed the early jump, winning most of the races to the puck and building a 3-0 lead after two periods. The Rangers picked up their play in the third period. Kevin Oliveira was positioning himself well during the game and he was rewarded with several scoring chances. He scored the lone Ranger goal in the third period, off assists from Jordan Watts and Jamie Kulla. Back to Results
January 25, 2003 - Burlington - 0-1 L: The two goalies put on a show for the fans, collectively turning away all but one shot - a power play goal that deflected off a skate and then the crossbar before sneaking in. The Rangers worked hard, shift after shift, and had more good scoring chances than Burlington. It was one of those nights for the Rangers, with two goals called off due to quick whistles and many pucks that missed the net by a whisker. Even though things were not going their way, the Rangers never let up. All and all, with the exception of having to listen to a "know-it-all" loud fan from Burlington, a good game to watch. Back to Results
February 3, 2004 - Brampton - 4-1 W: The Rangers worked through a tough situation. Interference was not being called and Brampton took full advantage. The Rangers had to fight through tugs, grabs, holds, picks and away-from-the-puck hits all night. All of the Ranger defencemen played with a lot of heart. Each defenceman had to make a play when he knew he was just about to get hit. The defencemen paid the price to make plays and their effort did not go unnoticed. Kyle Badham was the offensive force of the game, showing his goal scoring touch on the first two Ranger goals. On the first, he toughed it out in front of the net, gathered in a rebound and calmly turned and backanded it into the net. On the second, he took a tape to tape pass from John Kurtz and beat the Brampton goalie cleanly. Dan Hunt iced it, literally, with 35 seconds left. With the Rangers up 2-1 and the Brampton goalie on the bench, Hunt wired a shot from the Ranger goal-line into the empty net. Kurtz closed out the scoring with hardly any time left when he tipped in a pass from Alex Crepinsek. Other assists to Tyson Theaker (2), Kurtz (2), Badham and Jamie Kulla. Back to Results
February 4, 2004 - Burlington - 1-1 T: Both teams picked up right where they left off 10 days ago. Once again both teams played hard and were rewarded with promising scoring chances. Once again both goalies put on a show for the fans. Both teams played with discipline and there were very few penalties. There was no scoring until the third period, when Burlington took a 1-0 lead. Things were looking bleak for the Rangers, but they kept pressing. It felt as if the Rangers were snake-bitten and would not score. However, with just over a minute to play, Kyle Badham continued his offensive hot streak, corralling a puck in front of the net, patiently waiting for the Burlington goalie to go into a butterfly and then roofing the puck with authority. Tyson Theaker and John Kurtz picked up helpers on the tying goal. Back to Results
February 7, 2004 - Grey Bruce - 4-2 W: The Rangers came out strong, passing well and having success with their break-out. Meanwhile, the Rangers caused trouble for the Highlanders' break-out. Kevin Oliveira scored a nice goal into the top right corner. The teams entered the third period tied at 1. The Highlanders took a 2-1 lead. Oakville continued to press and Kyle Badham got a goal similar to the one he scored in Burlington three days earlier, scoring high from in tight. Sometimes in hockey, the puck just doesn't seem to want to go into the net, despite good chances. The Rangers have experienced that recently. As often happens, a team who goes through such a streak ends up catching a break. The Rangers got their break. John Kurtz was skating down the boards into the Highlanders' end. It is always a good idea to put the puck towards the net. Kurtz did so. The puck tipped off a stick and trickled through the Highlanders' goalie, almost in slow motion. The Rangers held the lead and Aaron Mirsky scored unassisted into an empty net late in the game. Assists to Badham, Kurtz and Mirsky (2). Back to Results
February 10, 2004 - Halton Hills - 3-3 T: Last year's Halton Hills team tended to do a lot of stick work and get involved in fights and skirmishes. This year's team is quite different - working hard, keeping their feet moving and concentrating on hockey. Given that the Rangers play a faced-paced game, the two teams have had some good games this year. This was no exception. The Rangers carried most of the play, but had to settle for a tie. It was a back and forth game, with the Rangers scoring first, the Hurricanes taking the lead in the second, the Rangers taking back the lead in the third and then the Hurricanes tying it up late in the game. Kyle Badham continues to be on fire offensively, scoring his fifth and sixth goals in four games. Kevin Oliveira scored a beauty on a text-book tip in, sending a point shot from Mike Ide high into the top corner. Ide also assisted on Badham's second goal. Other assists to Murray Cruickshank, Jordan Watts and Jamie Kulla. Back to Results
February 12, 2004 - Brampton - 3-0 W: Three Rangers had two-point nights. Kyle Badham extended his scoring streak with two more goals, while John Kurtz and Tyson Theaker each had two assists. The first goal was terrific. Theaker picked up the puck behind the Battalion net on the fly and fired a fast, accurate pass to Badham, who buried it on a one-timer. The game stayed close at 1-0 for quite a while until Aaaron Mirsky stole a loose puck in front of the net and slipped it past the surprised Battalion goalie. Graeme Moffatt made some super saves to earn a shutout, including a spectacular leg save in the first period. Dan Hunt also picked up an assist and is looking quite comfortable in his new role as a defenceman. Back to Results
February 18, 2004 - Guelph - 1-2 L: A disappointing effort by the Rangers for most of the game, with a glimmer of hope at the end. The Rangers were presented with a number of scoring opportunities throughout the game, but generally failed to capitalize or even get a solid shot on net. We can only hope that the Rangers learned their lesson - that they have to play hard for a full game. Alex Crepinsek scored the lone Ranger goal. Back to Results
February 21, 2004 - Halton Hills - 2-1 W: This was the last regular season meeting between two teams who have played close games all year. True to form, both teams put out a lot of effort, they kept the penalties to a minimum and they kept the fans on the edges of their seats. Graeme Moffatt made a number of highlight-reel saves throughout the game. Less than a minute after the Hurricanes scored the opening goal in the second period, Tyson Theaker sent one into the net off of a Hurricane defenceman. Having called the bank shot in advance, the goal counted. John Kurtz broke the tie in the third period on a power play. Kurtz took a pass from behind the net on his backhand and promptly deposited it in the net over the goalie's shoulder. Having had such close games all year, the Rangers fittingly won to finalize the regular season record between the teams at 2-2-1 each. Back to Results
February 22, 2004 - Brampton - 10-2 W: After allowing Brampton to build a 2-1 lead by the end of the first period, the Rangers went on a scoring rampage and never let up. February 25, 2004 - Welland - 3-4 L: Reminiscent of a game earlier this year, the Rangers outshot Welland, but the puck was not going into the Welland net. The Rangers carried the play through most of the game, but Welland capitalized on their chances. The Rangers mounted two come-backs, first tying it up after being down 2-0 and then tying it up again at 3. Welland went ahead with 5 minutes remaining. The Rangers put on lots of pressure, but did not tie the game. The Ranger penalty killing was perfect and they scored two power play goals. Murray Cruiskshank got the hit of the night. Mike Ide got the first goal off a slap shot from the point. Tyson Theaker scored a goal similar to the one he scored against Halton, banking the puck off the goalie and into the net. John Kurtz scored a nice goal into the top corner. Assists to Alex Crepinsek, Kyle Badham, Jordan Watts and Aaron Mirsky. Back to Results
February 27, 2004 - Hamilton - 0-4 L: The Rangers looked fairly sharp in the first period and could well have won if they sustained their play. However, the rest of the game was marred by numerous errors and sloppy play by the Rangers. Some days are better than others. Back to Results
February 29, 2004 - Grey Bruce - 5-3 W: The Rangers finished off the regular season in style by defeating the first place Highlanders once again. The Rangers spotted the Highlanders a 2-0 lead, but calmly fought back, tied it up, took the lead and never looked back. It was obvious from the effort in their skating and the many hard hits that both teams wanted the win. Specialty teams were important, because the referee was calling numerous penalties to each team. The Rangers' power play had success, as did its penalty kill. John Kurtz had a monster night on offence, chipping in on all five goals. Goals to Kurtz, Aaron Mirsky (2), Kyle Badham and Mike Ide, with assists to Badham (2), Kurtz (4), Murray Cruickshank and Dan Hunt. Back to Results
March 5, 2004 - Day 1 Overview: The Rangers took care of business on Day 1 of the tournament and put themselves in position to control their own destiny. They accomplished their goal of winning both games on Day 1. The Rangers showed poise, discipline and concentration and they effectively dominated both games. Back to Qualifying Weekend Standings
Halton Hills - 4-2 W: The Rangers got off to an inauspicious start and the Hurricanes ended up with a glorious scoring opportunity less than a minute into the game. Jeremy Webster made a nice glove save to stem the Hurricanes' tide. The rest of the Rangers responded. They gained their composure and played a strong and balanced game. It did not take the Rangers long to later come back from a 1-0 deficit and to build a lead. They continued with a dominating effort and controlled the play in the third period, not providing the Hurricanes with even a whiff of hope. Jordan Watts tipped in a Mike Ide slap shot from the point. Kevin Oliveira scored a true "goal-scorers" goal. He got the puck in front of the net. When the goalie dropped, Oliveira accurately roofed the puck, sending the goalie's water bottle tumbling into the air. Murray Cruickshank had a fantastic game on defence. Also scoring for Oakville were John Kurtz and Jamie Kulla, with other assists to Aaron Mirsky, Ide, Jamie Kulla, Alex Crepinsek and Brett Runciman. Back to Qualifying Weekend Standings
Welland - 4-2 W: The Rangers have had a tough time with Welland this year. Although the Rangers carried the play in many games against Welland, they had difficulty coming up with a "w". Today was different. Today, the final score reflected the play. The Rangers controlled the puck and the play, which seemed to discourage Welland. The Rangers opened the scoring and continued to press, but Welland tied it. The Rangers would not let another one slip away. They kept the heat on and built a 3-1 and then a 4-1 lead. Graeme Moffatt played very well in net. Mid-way through the third period, the wind was out of Welland's sails. The Tigers took a number of bad penalties, while the Rangers stayed disciplined and stayed out of the penalty box. As the time wound down, the Rangers poise continued to shine. Goals by John Kurtz (2), Kyle Badham and Cedric Soubry, with assists to Dan Hunt (2), Kurtz, Aaron Mirsky and Badham. Back to Qualifying Weekend Standings
March 6, 2004 - Day 2 Overview: It wasn't the way they planned it, but the Rangers achieved their objective in any event. The Rangers had to do well against St. Catharines, and they did. By the time they played Burlington, the result did not matter. The Rangers knew beforehand that they were heading for the final four, which means a game on Sunday. St. Catharines - 1-1 T: So far, this game was the highlight of the tournament as far as entertainment is concerned. Although neither team finished in the top four in league play, both are peaking at the right time and are shining in the qualifying tournament. They put on a show that was great to watch, with action at both ends of the ice. St. Kitts opened the scoring on a one-timer less than a minute into the game. From then on, the Rangers started to pour it on. They were rewarded with scoring opportunities but, for quite a while, no goals. During a power play in the second period, the Sabres goalie seemed to have his skate firmly planted against the post, with no room for the puck. Jordan Watts, who never gives up on a scoring chance, hit the puck just right and it snuck between the goalie's skate and the post. Aaron Mirsky and Cedric Soubry earned assists on the play. The Kurtz/Badham/Mirsky line has been creating scoring chances the whole tournament and this game was no exception. Both goalies put on a show. In the end, the two hot teams had to settle for a tie. Burlington 0-6 L: The Rangers did not need to win this game and, unfortunately, it showed in their lack of focus and effort. The long unexpected layover between games probably did not help. Burlington took advantage and carried most of the play. The game was marred by what appeared in this observer's opinion to be a display of poor sportsmanship by some of the Burlington players. It appeared that they were sore losers who were doing what they could to injure Oakville players, including by way of dirty hits and stickwork. Back to Qualifying Weekend Standings
March 7, 2004 - Hamilton 1-2 L: The Rangers joined Hamilton, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls in the final four, but fell one game short of their goal of participating in the OMHA Championships. The Rangers took a penalty off the opening faceoff and Hamilton scored a quick power play goal on a screen shot. From then on, Hamilton continued to press and the Rangers did their best to fend off Hamilton and get into an offensive mode. The score remained 1-0 until late in the second period. Hamilton won the puck behind the Rangers net and scored on a one-timer after some quick passes behind the net and then out front. The Rangers were heavily out shot. Jeremy Webster played a solid game in net and continued to make saves to give his team a chance to draw even. Late in the game, with just over three minutes to play, Jordan Watts and Tyson Theaker broke through on a two-on-one. Watts feathered a perfect pass to Theaker, who buried the puck in the Hamilton net. The Rangers pulled their goalie for added pressure as time wound down, but did not score the tying goal. September 6, 2003 - Grey Bruce Highlanders - 5-3 W: The Highlanders gave the Rangers trouble in league play last year. The Rangers’ new style of play may be the cure for those troubles. A slew of Ranger penalties led to three power play goals by the Highlanders, but the Rangers led throughout and won 5-3 to clinch a spot in championship round. Other goals were scored by Kevin Oliveira, Kyle Badham (2) and Aaron Mirsky, with assists to Dan Hunt (2), Jordan Watts (2), Mirsky, Kurtz and Jamie Kulla. Back to Results

Ranger goals to Tyson Theaker and Cedric Soubry, with assists to Alex Corrance, Dan Hunt and Stuart Favretto. Back to Results
October 18, 2003 - Napean Raiders - 2-0 W: The Rangers displayed some of the jump and energy that they showed earlier in the season. It was an enjoyable game to watch, with plenty of fast skating and some thunderous body checks on both sides. Cedric Soubry absolutely wired a slap shop from the blue line, scoring into the top corner. Graeme Moffatt did not face a lot of shots, but several of the ones that came through were high quality scoring chances and he earned his shutout. Kyle Badham scored the other Rangers' goal, with assists to Jamie Kulla, Tyson Theaker and Murray Cruickshank. Back to Results
October 18, 2003 - Pittsburgh Hornets - 1-3 L: The Hornets had not given up a goal in three games, but Oakville got one just over a minute into the game. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there. The Hornets responded with two quick goals and eventually built a 3-1 lead. The Rangers had pulled off three come-backs in the last four games. Tonight, however, they never really got going and the come-back fell short. Jordan Watts scored the lone Ranger goal off an assist from Aaron Mirsky. Back to Results

October 31, 2003 - Ottawa Valley Titans - 4-0 W: The Titans had won their first game and they might have taken the Rangers too lightly, based on the score in the Marlies game. Ranger scorers included Brett Runciman, Jordan Watts, Kevin Oliveira and Aaron Mirsky, with assists to Kyle Badham, Dan Hunt (2), Mirsky, Alex Crepinsek and John Kurtz. Back to Results
October 31, 2003 - Napean Raiders - 2-1 W: The Rangers needed a win or a tie to move into the "Round of 16", but you would not have known it from their somewhat sluggish start. Both Ranger goals were unassisted, the other one going to Kyle Badham. Back to Results

Toronto Marlies Holiday Classic
December 26-28, 2003: The Rangers experienced lows and highs during the Marlies Tournament. There is no way to sugar coat it - the Rangers played poorly during the first three games. For whatever reason, the Rangers got caught flat footed, lethargic and sloppy. To make matters worse, the Rangers took a number of bad penalties and often found themselves shorthanded. Low points included being shut out by the Young Nats, losing the Soo Thunder game with less than 3 seconds to play and a near-total collapse against Team Illinois after initially building a 2-0 lead. Fortunately, the Rangers regrouped for the last game of the tournament. They came up against the previously undefeated New Jersey Rockets. The Rangers laid on the body from the opening faceoff. They skated hard and kept their shifts short. Everyone on the team played well and gave a full-game effort. Jeremy Webster was solid in net. The game was close until part-way through the second period, when the Rangers scored three goals in less than 15 seconds. Later in the game, while the Rangers worked hard to keep it out of the Rockets' reach, Kyle Badham and John Kurtz each scored highlight-reel goals. On one play, Badham showed sure hands by corralling a bouncing pass on his backhand and then quickly roofing the puck. Kurtz took a bouncing pass at centre ice, he controlled the puck and then darted in for a breakaway, scoring on a deek to the right. The team should be congratulated for taking a bad situation and turning it around in the last game.
